CBC Normal Range: What Your Blood Test Results Mean
By Dr. Rajesh Kumar
Understand CBC normal ranges for hemoglobin, WBC, platelets, and RBC. Learn what high or low values mean and when to see a doctor.
A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is one of the most frequently ordered blood tests. Whether you received your report from Red Bio Path Labs or another diagnostic center, understanding what the numbers mean helps you have informed conversations with your doctor.
Hemoglobin (Hb)
Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body.
- Normal range (men): 13.5 – 17.5 g/dL
- Normal range (women): 12.0 – 15.5 g/dL
Low hemoglobin typically indicates anemia. Common causes include iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic disease, or blood loss. High hemoglobin may occur with dehydration, smoking, or polycythemia.
White Blood Cell (WBC) Count
WBCs are part of your immune system and fight infections.
- Normal range: 4,000 – 11,000 cells/μL
Elevated WBC often signals infection, inflammation, or stress. Low WBC (leukopenia) may result from viral infections, bone marrow disorders, or certain medications.
Platelet Count
Platelets help your blood clot and stop bleeding.
- Normal range: 150,000 – 400,000 /μL
Low platelets (thrombocytopenia) increase bleeding risk. High platelets may occur after surgery, with iron deficiency, or in certain blood disorders.
Red Blood Cell (RBC) Count
- Normal range (men): 4.5 – 5.9 million/μL
- Normal range (women): 4.0 – 5.2 million/μL
Abnormal RBC counts often correlate with hemoglobin and hematocrit changes seen in anemia or polycythemia.
When to See a Doctor
Consult your physician if your CBC shows values outside the reference range, especially if you have symptoms like persistent fatigue, unexplained bruising, frequent infections, or shortness of breath.
